INTRODUCTION Floods have hit the state of New South Wales in Australia, after monsoon rains - causing millions of dollars worth of damage. The floods, ironically, follow a dry season in which vast areas of Australia were devastated by bush-fires.

SYNOPSIS: Torrential rain flooded Sydney on Monday (8 March) and quickly shifted south, causing an emergency in the Dapto-Wallongong industrial area, 50 miles away from the city. Five inches of rain fell in the area in 14 hours, causing the evacuation of several homes.

Road gangs battled with massive mud slides on the main road from Sydney. The area had already been stripped of trees and foliage in preparation for road-widening work. Water cascading from cliffs on to the highways made them treacherous and impassable.

Rich pasture lands and crops suffered extensive damage and a group of horses in a low-lying area faced drowning. They were saved by a young man who jumped into the swirling waters and swam to one of the horses. He managed to get the animal to swim to higher ground and the other horses followed suit. All were saved.
