FILM SHOTS BY A FRENCH TELEVISION TEAM SHOWS SCENES FROM THE DEMONSTRATIONS IN WHICH THE INCIDENT OCCURRED.

TROUBLED BEGAN AT LUNCHTIME, WHEN SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHERED IN THE MAIN SQUARE TO STAGE A PROTEST. POLICE AND TROOPS DISPERSED THE PROTESTORS WITH BATON CHARGES AND WATER-CANNON.

STUDENTS AND WORKERS WHO HAD STOPPED WORK SOON AFTER LUNCH BEGAN ERECTING MAKESHIFT BARRICADES WITH WASTE-BINS AND STONES TO KEEP THE TROOPS OUR OF LITTLE STREETS ROUND THE SQUARE.

THE SOLDIERS BEGAN DROPPING TEAR GAS BOMBS AMONG THE CROWD. SOME OF THE CROWD THREW UNEXPLODED GAS SHELLS BACK. AS THE DAY WORE ON, THE CLASHES BECAME MORE VIOLENT. IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY, TROOPS OPENED FIRE ON DEMONSTRATORS. THEY FIRED OVER THE HEADS OF THE CROWDS, BUT ONE MAN WAS KILLED, AND A WOMAN WAS HIT IN THE SHOULDER. THE DEMONSTRATORS PICKED HER UP AND CARRIED HER OFF IN A CAR.

BY EVENING, THE STREETS WERE LITTERED WITH THE DEBRIS OF BARRICADES, EMPTY GAS CANISTERS, AND THE STONES THE DEMONSTRATORS HAD USED AS MISSILES. THE AIR WAS STILL ACRID WITH GAS-FUMES, AND SMOKE DRIFTED FROM SEVERAL BUILDINGS SET ALIGHT DURING THE DISTURBANCES. ALL OVER THE CITY, SMALL ALTARS HAD BEEN SET UP WITH FLOWERS AND CANDLES. ONE COMMEMORATED THE DEATH OF A YOUNG CZECH WHO BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. OTHERS BORE THE CHALKED INSCRIPTION: "LET US PRAY FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE OCCUPATION".

TODAY, ALL IS QUIET IN THE CITY - THE SECOND LARGEST IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA - TROOPS STILL PATROL THE STREETS, BUT THE CURFEW IMPOSED AFTER THURSDAY'S DISTURBANCES WAS LIFTED ON SUNDAY.
