  • Description

A group of young West Germans carrying the flags of 24 German territories now under communist rule, left Aachen, June 1, in the first leg of a protest march to the East-West German border. Before they left the city the Mayor of Aachen presented them with a statement on the Berlin situation signed by the Mayor of Berlin Willi Brandt and the West German Minister for German Affairs, Herr Lemmer.

Outside the city the marchers handed the flags and the statement to the second group who will cover the next stage. During the trek six groups of West Germans will take turns in covering a part of the route.

Several other teams of marchers are on their way to the border from various parts of West Germany. They plan to reach it on June 17, the date of the East German uprising.

President of West Germany Herr Luebke, is due to address a protest meeting on the Hohen Meissen border. By the time all the marchers arrive they are expected to stretch from Basel in the South to Flensburg in the North, along the border that divides East and West Germany.
