    NEARLY TWO MILLION PEOPLE - MANY OF THEM CHILDREN WERE OUT IN NEW YORK YESTERDAY FOR THE ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DAY CARNIVAL PARADE, DEDICATED BY ITS SPONSORS TO THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD.

    IT IS THE FORTIETH PARADE OF ITS TYPE HELD THROUGH NEW YORK SINCE 1924. THIS YEAR'S PARADE WAS A MAMMOTH AFFAIR, FEATURING BALLOON FIGURES CARICATURING MANY OF THE POPULAR CHILDREN'S HEROES OF THE DAY; BANDS; ELABORATE FLOATS AND A NUMBER OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITIES, INCLUDING THE WORLD CHAMPION DRIVER, JACK BRABHAM, OF AUSTRALIA.

    THE PARADE TOOK TWO HOURS TO PASS THROUGH THE COMMERCIAL CENTRE OF NEW YORK. IT IS SPONSORED EACH YEAR BY ONE OF THE LARGEST DEPARTMENT STORES IN THE UNITED STATES.

    THE MASSIVE BALLOONS, SOME AS HIGH AS SEVENTY FEET (20 METRES) ARE SAID TO BE THE ONLY ONES OF THEIR TYPE IN THE WORLD. THEY ARE USUALLY SEEN ONLY ONCE A YEAR - AT THE THANKSGIVING PARADE. THEY ARE MADE OF A LIGHTWEIGHT NYLON SUBSTANCE.
