  • Description

A leak from a gas reservoir in Eschenfeld, Bavaria, caught alight last Saturday and defied all conventional methods to extinguish it. Finally, Texan specialist fire-fighter Paul "Red" Adair was called in.

The Texan's own method was a chemical solution mixed with water, and by Friday (25 September) the flame had been extinguished.

As routine probings were being carried out on the reservoir, gas suddenly surged out of the ground from a depth of 600 yards and a spiral of flame shot into the air.

    Two men were slightly injured.

Adair's mixture of a chemical solution and water was prepared in special red lorries and then fed into the source of the flame by means of long pipes. The gas is stored in Ruhrgas-AG.
