    THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION BETWEEN AIR-SEA RESCUE SERVICES BEGAN TODAY (SATURDAY) AT COXYDE AIR BASE IN BELGIUM. SEVEN NATIONS ARE REPRESENTED - BRITAIN, BELGIUM, THE NETHERLANDS, THE UNITED STATES, DENMARK, ITALY AND FRANCE.

    THE COMPETITION IS BEING HELD OVER THREE DAYS, AND EACH NATIONAL TEAM IS USING ITS OWN HELICOPTER AND RESCUE EQUIPMENT.

    AMONG THE VARIOUS SECTIONS OF THE COMPETITION ARE CONTESTS IN AIR-SEA RESCUE: FIRE-FIGHTING; AND NAVIGATION OVER SEA AND LAND.

    EACH COUNTRY IS REPRESENTED BY TWO CREWS, AND THEY ARE RECKONED TO BE AMONG THE BEST MEN IN THE WORLD AT THE TYPE OF MISSIONS THEY FLY. ALL OF THE CREWS HAVE TAKEN PART IN SPECTACULAR RESCUE OPERATIONS.

    THE BRITISH TEAM IS FROM THE ROYAL AIR FORCE AIR-SEA RESCUE STATION AT MANSTON IN KENT. THE AMERICAN TEAM CONSISTS OF FLIERS FROM THE ATLANTIC AERO-SPACE RESCUE AND RECOVERY CENTRE IN WEST GERMANY. THE ROYAL NETHERLAND AIR FORCE CREW HAS PARTICIPATED IN NIGHT RESCUE OPERATIONS IN THE NORTH SEA. THE DANISH TEAM WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR RESCUING 60 PEOPLE FROM A STRICKEN FERRY INT HE SKAGERRAK STRAIT, AND THE ITALIAN FLIERS RESCUED TWO THOUSANDS PEOPLE FROM THE FLOODED PO VALLEY.
