Brazil best England 1-0 in an exciting United States' Bicentennial Soccer Cup match in the California city of Los Angeles on Sunday (23 May).

With only a minute to go before the end of play a goal by Brazil's Roberto killed England's hopes of beating Brazil for the first time in 20 years. However, England was not disgraced as both teams played superb, hard hitting football, which many sports writers claim has done marvels for promoting the sport in the United States.

The game was played before a crowd of 32,000 -- one of the largest soccer crowds seen in the U.S. for many years. Throughout, spectators roared their approval at the tactics of the players.

In the first half English seemed to dominate play and Keegan soon became a firm favourite with the crowd. Only Riverlino from the opposing team attracted attention as England kept hold on the ball during long periods of play.

But as the second half started scoreless the Brazilians increased the tempo and brought on two new men, Roberto and Marinho. It was Marinho who had the greater influence, immediately slipping away from the left side of the defence to thrash a 35 yard (31 metres) shot onto the England crossbar.

As the game progressed each team vied for the ball, each determined to score. Just as it looked like ending as a scoreless draw, an unsuccessful attempt at a goal by England was turned to advantage by Brazil and Roberto slipped in and pushed the ball in at the far post to score.
