  • Description

The Pakistan Army commander in East Bengal, Lieutenant-General Azin "Tiger" Niazi, was flown from Dacca to India on Monday (20 December).

General Niazi, who formally surrendered to Indian troops last week, was given full military protocol at the airport. He was transferred from a helicopter to an Indian army aircraft, before leaving for Calcutta.

About 3,000 Pakistani troops--many of them wounded, have already been taken to India and the transfer of an estimated 73,000 Pakistani soldiers is expected to be completed within a month.

Dacca itself was reported quiet on Monday by an Indian government spokesman in Delhi. After checking with the self-styled Bangladesh Government of East Pakistan, the spokesman denied reports of widespread rioting. Soldiers and civilians busied themselves repairing some of the bomb and mortar damage done to the city.
