Background: Hats are black - after several seasons of being mainly relegated to the role of accessories. In New York yesterday (Wednesday) headgear came back in its own right-with coats and outfits to match the hat.

A green felt "Gaucho" hat with braided band and brim is matched by a same-tone trouser suit.

Wildcat-an unusual choice in itself-is rendered even more original by being made int a reversible hat......with an equally-transformable cape.

Not even the duck-hunters' reserves are sacred-the traditional cap-and-ear muffs become very fashionable in black vinyl and fake lamb.

An Australian might have some difficulty in recognising his "Swagger" hat with upturned brim when it is made up of white and grey mink.

A leading feature of the majority of the hats is size - and one fox-fur creation is described merely as "Cushion" hat. It is worn over a beige walking suit comprised of trousers and cape.

For the colder evenings out-an elegant diamante-trimmed midi-coat accompanies a large, floppy grey chinchilla "Beret".

As in many of the European collections - the "Zhivago" look came in strikingly with a Cossak fox hat and matching fox-trimmed maxi-coat.
