    Background: ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

The contact committee formed to attempt to re-convene the 19th Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit, has been meeting in Ethiopia. President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania was accorded a warm reception when he arrived at Bele international airport. The six-nation committee is attempting to overcome the obstacles presented when the last OAU Summit in Tripoli was abandoned after several members of the organisation boycotted the discussions because of the presence of members of the Saharan Democratic Republic (SADR) proclaimed by Polisario guerrillas, fighting in the Western Sahara for independence form Morocco. President Nyerere was greeted by Ethiopian leader, Mengistu Haile Mariam. The two leaders inspected a guard of honour on the tarmac and were joined by OAU Secretary-General, Edem Kodjo and several members of the Ethiopian Government on a podium for a march past by the Ethiopian army. Later the President and Chairman Mengistu had discussions before the President of the Congo People's Republic, Denis Sassou-Nguesso arrived to be greeted by the Ethiopian leader and other government officials. After meeting for one day, five of the six-member committee issued a statement saying they would continue to co-ordinate their efforts to re-convene the OAU Summit. The only representative missing from the meeting was the delegate from Mali, who apparently arrived late. No reason was given for his absence, and no further details were released.
