    FLOODS THAT SWEPT SEOUL AND OTHER NORTHERN AREAS OF SOUTH KOREA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATHS OF 118 CIVILIANS AND MILITARY PERSONNEL AND CAUSED DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT ABOUT GBP600,000. MORE THAN 30,000 HOUSES WERE INUNDATED BY THE SWOLLEN HAN RIVER, AND ABOUT 1,900 WASHED AWAY OF DESTROYED.

    ALMOST ALL THE AMERICAN HELICOPTERS IN THE FRONTLINE AREAS BORDERING NORTH KOREA WERE MOBILISED TO AIRLIFT SOME 4,000 SOUTH KOREANS TO SAFETY WHEN THEY WERE TRAPPED IN FLOODED LOW AREAS ALONG THE HAN RIVER SKIRTING THE SUBURBS OF SEOUL. ONE SECTION OF A BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER COLLAPSED.

    APART FROM THOSE KILLED, 92 SOUTH KOREAN CIVILIANS AND MILITARY PERSONNEL WERE INJURED AS A RESULT OF THE FLOODS, BUT NO AMERICAN CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED. AMERICAN RESCUE OPERATIONS ALSO INCLUDED THE AMBULANCES AND TRUCKS OF THE 65TH MEDICAL GROUP.

    THE FLOODING WAS CAUSED BY THE HEAVIEST RAIN IN THE SEOUL AREA FOR MANY YEARS.
