  • Description

The fifteenth anniversary of independence for the Malagasy Republic was celebrated on Thursday (26 June) with a ceremonial military parade in the capital, Tananarive.

The occasion was marked by the first official public appearance of the country's new leader, Lieutenant-Commander Didier Ratsiraka -- sworn to office as head of the Supreme Revolutionary Council eleven days earlier. Commander Ratsiraka -- a former Malagasy Foreign Minister -- was accompanied by a number of foreign diplomatic officials, including, Somalia's President Siad Barre.

A further cause for celebration in the Malagasy Republic on Thursday was the ending of martial law. On Wednesday, the government announced the lifting of restrictions imposed in February following the assassination of newly-appointed head of state, Richard Ratsimandrava. A state of emergency continues, however, and the government communique said that military provincial governors had to decide whether to lift local curfew regulations.
