  • Description

Volleyball....and the Soviet Union swept to a straight-sets win over Poland in their Men's World Cup championship match in Tokyo on Monday (28 November). This win by a score of 15-7, 15-9, and 15-5, avenged the Soviet's loss to Poland in the Olympic final in Montreal last years.

SYNOPSIS: The final round-robin tournament was staged in Tokyo's Olympic swimming stadium, which had courts specially laid down for the tournament.

From the outset, the Soviet team, in dark shirts and playing from right to left, looked the better equipped of the two. They appeared more mobile, combined shrewdly, and their key player near the net were in crushing from. Olympic champions Poland had started favourite for the tournament for the tournament final series, which also featured Japan and Cuba.

The Soviets had started the final series uncertainly -- they had to come from behind to beat Cuba -- but now they were in full flow. An unstoppable smash gave them the first set 15-7.

The Third Set, with the Soviet Union leading two sets to nil. Despite flashes of strong play from Poland, the outcome looked scarcely in doubt. After the Poles deprived them of a gold medal in Montreal, the Soviets had something to prove....and they were doing it convincingly.

Match point.....and the Polish team built up some suspense by sustaining a long rally. But they were merely delaying the inevitable. The well-drilled Soviets had too much strength around the court; there was no weak link to probe. The manoeuvred neatly for the killing shot - to take off the match. It came with a gentle tap over the net.
