  • Description

THE SAN MARCO B, AN ITALIAN SATELLITE, WAS LAUNCHED ON WEDNESDAY FROM AN OFF--SHORE PLATFORM IN THE INDIAN OCEAN, ABOUT 100 MILES (161 KMS) OFF MOMBASA, KENYA. A PROJECT SPOKESMAN ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH AND SAID: "IT LOOKS LIKE A COMPLETE SUCCESS."
A FOUR-STAGE SCOUT ROCKET, PROVIDED BY THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA), HURLED THE 245 POUND (115 KGS) SATELLITE INTO AN EQUATORIAL ORBIT.

MONITORING STATIONS IN ECUADOR AND PERU REPORTED THE CRAFT WAS IN ITS SCHEDULED ORBIT AFTER SEPARATING FROM THE FINAL STAGE OF THE ROCKET.

THE TINY BUT INTRICATE SATELLITE WAS DESIGNED BY THE ITALIAN COMMISSION FOR SPACE RESEARCH TO GAIN INFORMATION ABOUT ATMOSPHERIC DENSITY AT HIGH ALTITUDES, AND SOLAR RADIATION.

THE SATELLITE IS PLANNED TO STAY IN SERVICE FOR SIX MONTHS, ORBITING THE EARTH EVERY 90 MINUTES AT A HEIGHT OF BETWEEN 135 MILES (217 KMS) AND 500 MILES (805 KMS).
