    THE PHILIPPINES CELEBRATED ITS 71ST ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE YESTERDAY (12 JUNE). PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS LED THE COUNTRY IN COMMEMORATING THE OCCASION WHEN HE ATTENDED A CEREMONY AT THE MEMORIAL TO JOSE RIZAL, THE HERO OF THE REVOLUTION.

    THE CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT MANILA'S LUNETA PARK. PRESIDENT MARCOS, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE AND SON, MARKED THE OCCASION BY RAISING A HUGE FLAG - WITH HIS SON LENDING A HAND. HE THEN LAID A WREATH AT THE MONUMENT TO RIZAL, WHO WAS EXECUTED BY THE SPANIARDS WHEN HE LED THE SUCCESSFUL UPRISING IN 1898.

    THE CELEBRATION ALSO HAD POLITICAL OVERTONES, FOR AMONG THOSE PRESENT WAS A LARGE GROUP OF MOSLEMS FROM MINDANO ISLAND IN THE SOUTH WHO ARE REGARDED AS STAUNCH PRO-MARCOS MEN AND WHOSE VOTES WILL BE IMPORTANT IN NOVEMBER'S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

    THE CAMPAIGN WARMS UP ON SUNDAY (15 JUNE) WHEN THE OPPOSITION LIBERAL PARTY HOLDS AN AMERICAN-STYLE CONVENTION TO ELECT ITS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. HOWEVER, AT THE MOMENT THE ODDS ARE IN FAVOUR OF PRESIDENT MARCOS WINNING RE-ELECTION.
