    STUDENTS AT A CHICAGO ELECTRONICS SCHOOL RECENTLY DEMONSTRATED A PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE PRINCIPLE OF OPPOSING MAGNETIC FIELDS. THEY COOKED A MEAL ON A METAL PLATE THAT WAS SUSPENDED IN THE AIR WITH NO VISIBLE MEANS OF SUPPORT.

    THE IDEA BEGAN AFTER A STUDENT ASKED A TEACHER HOW OPPOSING MAGNETIC FIELDS OPERATE. TO EXPLAIN, THE TEACHER TOOK THE STUDENT TO A LABORATORY AND PLACED A METAL PLATE BETWEEN TWO ELECTRICALLY INDUCED MAGNETIC FIELDS OF EQUAL STRENGTH ABOVE AND BELOW THE PLATE. THE PLATE FLOATED FOR AS LONG AS THE MAGNETIC FIELDS WERE KEPT AT EQUAL STRENGTH.

    THE STUDENT NOTED THAT THE PLATE HAD WARMED UP, THE RESULT OF THEIR ACTION OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD ON THE MOLECULES IN ITS STRUCTURE. OTHER STUDENTS DECIDED TO TRY FRYING BACON AND EGGS ON THE PLATE. THEY FOUND THE EXPERIMENT WORKED PERFECTLY. THE ONLY HEAT IS THE HEAT GENERATED IN THE PLATE ITSELF. THEREFORE, THEY FOUND THEY COULD EASILY DRAPE A TABLECLOTH OVER THE BOTTOM MAGNET WITHOUT IT BURNING.

    IT IS AN IMPRESSIVE DEMONSTRATION, BUT THERE APPEARS TO BE NO COMMERCIAL APPLICATION. ALSO, THE STUDENTS HAVE NOT YET BEEN ABLE TO WORK OUT A WAY TO HAVE THE PLATE WASHED ELECTRONICALLY AND PUT AWAY....
