Background: The Soviet Union defeated the United States 101 to 87 in the final of the Nations' Cup basketball series, played in Bogota, Colombia, on Saturday (31 August). About 30,000 South American basketball fans packad the stadium for the final.

The Soviets were away to a good start, scoring soon after the opening of the match. The United States counter-attacked and set a scoring pace which was to continue through to the end of the first period. The score then was the Soviet Union 48, the United States 42.

The blistering pace did not slacken dring the secodn half, with the final score - the Soviet Union 101, the United States 87.

On Thursday night (29 August) the US team entered the final round with a win over Puerto Rico. The score was 99-86.
