Background: The Vice-President of Iraq, M. Taha Mohiddine Maarouf visited Mauritania at the weekend for two days of talks with leaders including President Moktar Ould Daddah during which a trade agreement was signed.
SYNOPSIS: The Iraqi party arrived early on Saturday (6 May) at Nouakchott Airport where they were warmly greeted by Mauritanian ministers including M. Ahmed Ould Mohamed Salah, the Transport and Equipment Minister, Foreign Minister M. Hamdi Ould Mouknass and others. Afterwards Vice-President Maarouf inspected a guard of honour and met the press and foreign diplomats before the party set off for the first round of talks with President Daddah at the Presidential palace.
President Daddah and the Iraqi Vice-President held two rounds of talks during the visit. Vice-President Maarouf said the purpose of the visit was to meet the Mauritanian leaders and review the strong relations which exist between the two countries. During their meetings, the leaders discussed the present situation in the Arab world, and elsewhere. Later, Vice President Maarouf was guest of honour at a dinner in Nouakchott.
