  • Description

At least 29 people died and 600 were taken to hospital after a fire aboard an express train in a tunnel near Fukui in Western Japan.

The fire began in the train's dining car, and although staff controlled the fire for a while, they eventually had to run for their lives. The driver stopped his train to unhitch the burning carriages, but after re-starting, a power failure brought the train to a halt three miles inside the tunnel.

An express on the opposite line rescued about a hundred people, but for the others it was a nightmare stumble through the long, dark smoke-filled tunnel.

Many of the passengers were sleeping when the fire broke out. Rescue teams backed trains in from each end of the tunnel to pick up the injured, found lying alongside the rails ... and many were found huddled in tunnel alcoves trying to escape the deadly smoke and fumes.
