    PRIME MINISTER EISAKU SATO OF JAPAN ARRIVED IN SAIGON YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) FOR AN OFFICIAL FOUR-HOUR VISIT TO SOUTH VIETNAM. MR. SATO WAS ORIGINALLY TO STAY UNTIL TODAY (SUNDAY) BUT CUT SHORT HIS VISIT BECAUSE OF THE DEATH OF FORMER JAPANESE PREMIER SHIGERU YOSHIDA IN TOKYO ON FRIDAY (20 OCTOBER).

    MR. SATO WAS GREETED AT SAIGON'S TAN SON NHUT AIRPORT BY SOUTH VIETNAM'S VICE PREMIER ELECT, NGUYEN CAO KY, AND UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR ELLSWORTH BUNKER.

    HE SAID HE WANTED TO GIVE "SERIOUS THOUGHT TO THE PROBLEM OF HOW TO RESTORE PEACE AND BRING PROSPERITY TO VIETNAM".

    MR. SATO ARRIVED IN SAIGON FROM MANILA WHERE HE AND THE PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT FERDINAND MARCOS DISCUSSED WAYS OF CREATING A DIALOGUE BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM FOR ENDING THE WAR.

    DURING HIS BRIEF STAY MR. SATO, WHO WAS ON THE LAST STAGE OF A 10-NATION TOUR OF ASIA, HAD TALKS WITH PRESIDENT-ELECT NGUYEN VAN THIEU AND AIR VICE-MARSHAL KY.

    HE SAID AFTERWARDS THAT HE HAD "DEEP RESPECT FOR THEIR DESIRE TO BRING ABOUT PEACE."
    MR. SATO EXPRESSED HIS "FEVERENT WISH" FOR PEACE IN VIETNAM AND SAID HE HOPED THAT THIS WISH WOULD BE CONVEYED TO THE PEOPLE OF NORTH VIETNAM.
