  • Description

Mrs. Ida Sallustro, wife of kidnapped industrialist Oberdan Sallustro, made an impassioned appeal to his captors on radio and television in Buenos Aires on Thursday (23 March). "I ask you to treat him humanely and make known when you will free him," she said.

Mr. Sallustro, 57-year-old Italian chief executive of the Fiat Motor Company in Argentina, was kidnapped on Tuesday by members of the Trotskyite People's Revolutionary Army. A photograph of the captive man was delivered to the evening newspaper La Razon earlier on Wednesday.

At first, the kidnappers' only reply to Mrs. Sallustro's appeal was a message describing the Argentine Government as "puppets of Yankee imperialism". But today (Friday), they announced that Mr. Sallustro would be executed by firing squad unless a million-dollar ransom was paid and 50 guerrillas released from prison.

The message said the ransom should be paid in the form of supplies to schools, and the prisoners given passports to enable them to go to Algeria.
