    Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban spoke on the alleged Egyptian arms buildup in the ceasefire zone at an extra ordinary session of Parliament on Tuesday (25 Aug).

    He was replying to opposition proposals for a general debate on the U.S. attitude to contravention of the truce agreement and on the problem of Israeli prisoners of war being held by Egypt and Syria.

    He warned that Israel regarded any breech of the cease-fire agreement as a serious obstacle to the success of the peace talks which opened at the United Nations on Tuesday.

    The Foreign Minister promised opposition members that the would provide information on contracts with U. S. was maintaining with the Soviet Union of Egypt on cease-fire contravention.

    Opposition leader Menahem Begin said his party had agreed to the truce in the belief that the U.S. would not mislead Israel on the vital matter of the military standstill on the cease-fire lines. It now felt that it had been a mistake to agree to the cease-fire.

    Regarding the question of POWs Mr Eban said that Israeli Ambassador to the UN Mr Yosef Tekoah, had been instructed not to enter any discussions with Dr Jarring without raising the question of Israeli prisoners. He recalled that in previous talks with Dr Jarring had resulted in a full exchange of prisoners taken in the June 1967 War.

    The subject was referred to the Foreign Affairs Committee for further action.
