    A SMALL PART OF THE TREASURE IS BEING SOLD BY AUCTION IN NEW YORK TODAY (SATURDAY).

    THE SEARCH FOR HE SUNKEN TREASURE SHIPS BEGAN NEARLY EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO WHEN ONE OF THE DIVERS, MR. KP WAGNER FOUND A NUMBER OF COINS ON A FLORIDA BEACH. THE FIRST HUNT FAILED, BUT AFTER A GREAT DEAL OF RESEARCH THE WRECKS WERE LOCATED 34 MILES (5 KILOMETRES) SOUTH OF CAPE KENNEDY.

    THE FIRST COINS, GOLD DOUBLOONS, WERE RECOVERED IN MAY, 1964, FROM A WRECK LYING IN ONLY 50 FEET (15 METRES) OF WATER. IN ONE DAY WAGNER AND HIS FELLOW DIVERS RECOVERED NEARLY ONE MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF GOLD COINS.

    AMONG THE ITEMS OF TREASURE BEING SOLD TODAY IS A FABULOUS EMBLEM OF OFFICE. IT CONSISTS OF A GOLD CHAIN, MORE THAN ELEVEN FEET (4 METRES) LONG AND A GOLD WHISTLE. IT WAS MADE IN CHINA FOR THE COMMANDER OF THE SUNKEN SPANISH FLEET CAPTAIN-GENERAL JUAN ESTEBAN UBILLA.

    THE DIVING TEAM IS TO RESUME EXPLORING THE WRECKS IN APRIL THEY SAY THERE IS STILL ABOUT GBP7-MILLION STERLING WORTH OF TREASURE TO BE RECOVERED.
