  • Description

Sweden's Bjorn Borg beat Rumanian defending champion Ilie Nastase in Rome on Monday (3 June) become the youngest ever winner of the mens' singles at the Italian Open Tennis Championships.

Seventeen-year-old Borg took only an hour and a quarter to beat Nastase -- who is rated one of the world's best players -- 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Borg's relentless attacking game gradually unnerved Nastase who displayed his well known stormy temperament during the straight st defeat. Sometimes Nastase s???emed top lose interest in the game and once in the last set he threw down his racket in disgust and kicked it.

Borg fully deserved his win Earlier in the day he had to finish off a five se semi-final against Argentine Guillermo Vilas. He also had to overcome a gusty, troublesome wind and a crowd cheering for Nastase, the favourite.

It was the fourth time Borg and Nastase have played each other. They have now won two gams each.
