Background: Refugee camps in Honduras are reported to be filling up with dependents of counter-revolutionary Nicaraguan forces ("Contras") fighting their country's Sandinista regime. At one camp, near the town of Danli, the numbers have swelled from about 200 to one-thousand in the past six months. The sudden increase in refugees is said to be the result of recent Sandinista thrust against the Contras along Nicaraguan border towns. The Sandinistas have charged that the Contras are being trained in Honduras with sponsorship from the Honduran and United States governments. But both the Contras and Honduras have denied that they are in collusion against Nicaragua. There is no doubt though, that Nicaraguans fleeing the Sandinista government are being made welcome in Honduran camps. Tents and food rations have been provided by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and by the Red Cross. In June this year UNHCR said there were 18,700 Nicaragua refugees in Honduras. It said most of them were of Miskito and Sumo origin.
