  • Description

The world famous Chelsea Flower Show opens in London on Wednesday (26 May) and officials are expecting to beat last year's record attendance of 150,000 people.

The Show is held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea and covers 27 acres (11 hectares). The first was held in 1913 and the interruption of two world wars mares 1976 the 55th Show.

1976 is also the centenary of the Royal National Rose Society and has been declared the "Year of the Rose". This has been reflected by some of the exhibits at Chelsea, including the first showing of a new hybrid rose - Rosa Persica. It is a wild rose from Iran and is unique in having yellow flowers with a bright red 'eye'. Botanists have taken 150 years to raise the hybrid.

There are a number of foreign exhibits this year, ranging from Belgian house plants and South African flowers to an exhibition by the Dutch Flower Growers Association.

Visitors will also have a chance though to look at the advances in gardening tools and equipment, including a new nine-sided greenhouse. But many people will be going simply to view the wide range of flowers, plants and vegetables that have given the Chelsea Flower Show its high reputation.
