  • Description

MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE 44TH RANGER BATTALION -- INCLUDING A WOMAN KNOWN AS THE "TIGER LADY" -- HAVE RECEIVED THE UNITED STATES PRESIDENTIAL CITATION FOR BRAVERY. AT A PARADE OF THE BATTALION AT CAN THO, ABOUT 110 MILES SOUTH-WEST OF SAIGON, THE CITATION WAS READ OUT TO THEM BY GENERAL WILLIAM WESTMORELAND, THE AMERICAN MILITARY COMMANDER IN SOUTH VIETNAM, WHO ALSO AWARDED GALLANTRY MEDALS INDIVIDUALLY.

AMONG THOSE TO BE DECORATED WAS THE "TIGER LADY", WARRANT OFFICER HO THI QUE, WHOSE HUSBAND -- THE BATTALION COMMANDER, MAJOR LE VAN DAN -- WAS ALSO DECORATED. GENERAL WESTMORELAND WAS ASSISTED IN THE CEREMONY BY HIS ASSISTANT, GENERAL ADAMS, WHILE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GENERALS LOOKED ON.

LAST APRIL, THE 44TH RANGER BATTALION WAS AIRLIFTED BY HELICOPTERS INTO A VIETCONG-HELD AREA IN CHUONG THIEN PROVINCE. AS THEY LANDED, THE RANGERS WERE MET BY MACHINE-GUN FIRE AND SUFFERED HEAVY CASUALTIES. HOWEVER, THEY PRESSED THEIR ATTACK, AND SOME HOURS LATER THE VIETCONG WITHDREW.
