Background: Some 30 lawyers and 100 defence witnesses appeared at an Athens' court on Monday, for the opening of the trial of 25 Greeks accused of plotting the overthrow of the government. The accused, including two women and nine students, will be tried in two separate groups.

They are charged with plotting to overthrow by force the army-backed regime and facilitate a communist takeover -- an offence which carries maximum death penalty. All are accused of having set up illegal machinery of the outlawed Greek Communist Party. The indictment said that the group had printed literature containing subversive material and slogans, and that they recruited new members to fight against the regime.

Greece is still under martial law, in force since the 1967 army takeover, and this is only the second case of its kind to be tried by a civil court since then. Previously such cases came before courts martial.
