  • Description

Driving his thirty-five foot (10 metre), twin-engined Cigarette power boat, Bob Nordskog, of Van Nys, California, won the Bicardi-Sam Griffith Memorial Offshore Power Boat Race on Saturday (10 May).

Nordskog finished fourth in the one-hundred and eighty-four mile (296 kilometre) race, but the first three boats to cross the finish line were disqualified for missing one checkpoint.

Officially second was Sandy Satullo, of Fairview Park, Ohio, in a forty foot (12 metre) Corsa, and third was Brazilian driver Wally Franz, of Sao Paulo, in a 38 foot (11 metre) Bertram boat.

The disqualified first placer Hal Sahlman of Florida, would have set a new record for the race. He covered the distance in two hours, ten minutes -- an average speed of ninety-one miles (145 kilometres) an hour.

Sahlman is the world speed record holder for the measured mile.

Until the last ten miles (16 kilometres) of the race, Sahlman, in "Spirit", had shared the lead with Californian Jack Tushinsky ("Jumpin' Jack") and Sam James, of Florida, ("Whittaker Moppie").

Sahlman and James went on to finish first and second, while Tushinsky dropped out with engine trouble.

They and two other drivers were disqualified for missing the Fort Lauderdale checkpoint, and Nordskog, driving "Powerboat Magazine Special", was declared the winner.
