  • Description

The exiled Roman Catholic Primate of Hungary, Cardinal Joszef Mindszenty, led a crowd of some quarter-of-a-million people at the annual pilgrimage at Fatima on Friday (13 October).

Many Hungarian exiles in Portugal were among the pilgrims who heard the 80-year old Cardinal call on the peoples of Portugal and Hungary to join together in peace, understanding and without hatred.

The ceremonies commemorated the appearance of the Virgin Mary in 1917 to three Portuguese peasant children, Lucia De Jesus and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto. The ceremonies began with Benediction of the sacrament and with High Mass.

Later in the day, the Cardinal addressing the assembled multitude in Hungarian through an interpreter, again celebrated Mass and blessed 142 sick people from various countries.

The Cardinal stayed the night in Fatima and on Saturday (14 October) was due to visit the 72-year old Lucia, the only survivor of the three children. She is now a Carmelite Nun and has only left the convent on the occasion of Pope Paul's visit to Fatima.

The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared on three occasions to the children with three messages.
