  • Description

About 500 Cambodian soldiers are receiving military training from the South Vietnamese Government in the Mekong Delta. They are the first detachment of Cambodians to be sent there.

The soldiers are being trained at the Chi Lang military training centre which is in Chau Doc province of South Vietnam, about 100 miles (160 kilometre) west of Saigon. They arrive in three groups on July 9, each group having four companies.

The training scheme will last for five weeks after which they will be sent back to Cambodia to become combat soldiers. The Cambodians sent to the training centre include newly drafted soldiers as well as career soldiers, there are also regular and non-commissioned officers.

The Cambodian Army has been fighting pro-Sihanouk forces in Cambodia with substantial help from the U.S Army and the South Vietnamese regular Army. Although the American forces withdrew recently, the South Vietnamese have stayed on, continuing to have American air support for their operations.
