    THE JAPANESE DEFENCE AGENCY'S TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH DEPARTMENT HAS BEGUN A SERIES OF TESTS TO CHECK RADIO ACTIVE FALLOUT IN THE ATMOSPHERE FOLLOWING THE EXPLOSION ON SATURDAY (17 JUNE) BY THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA OF HER FIRST HYDROGEN BOMB.

    FROM CALCULATIONS ALREADY MADE, OFFICIALS BELIEVED THE FIRST TRACES OF RADIO ACTIVITY WOULD REACH JAPAN ON SUNDAY (18 JUNE), CARRIED ON STRONG WINDS FROM THE NORTHWEST OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC.

    TWO F-86-F AIRCRAFT OF THE JAPANESE AIR SELF-DEFENCE FORCE HAVE BEEN MAKING DAILY FLIGHTS OVER THE SOUTHERN MOST JAPANESE ISLAND OF KYUSHU TO COLLECT NUCLEAR FALLOUT FROM THE EXPLOSION. THE SAMPLES ARE COLLECTED IN GUMMED PAPER FIXED TO THE WINGS.

    AT THE AGENCY'S LABORATORIES AT CHIBA CITY, 40 KMS (24 MILES) EAST OF TOKYO TESTS ARE CARRIED OUT ON RAIN WATER AND WITH THE USE OF FILTERS, A CONTINUOUS CHECK IS KEPT ON THE ATMOSPHERE.

    OFFICIAL SAY THAT AT PRESENT THERE IS NO DANGER BUT THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH THE SITUATION.
