THREE: JAVIER PEREZ DE CUELLAR: "Well, we maintain, really, a great interest in the problem of the Middle East, and, but I don't see any possibility for the Secretary General of the United Nations to send in any emissary to the area, and, I think if I found, I find that there is a possibility for a United Nations emissary to make a positive contribution to the solution of the problems I would be ready to do it, but I don't think that the time is right for such a decision, and as far as the, as you know, the United Nations, as far as the Middle East is concerned, is involved mainly in peace keeping operations, and I am asking that the Secretary General (sic) Brian Urquhart to go to the area at the end of this week in order to see (indistinct), I am sorry, (indistinct) in order to see on the spot what is the situation of our peace keeping operations, which are, as you know, in the Middle East, (indistinct) as well."

Speaking at his first news conference since he took office, he said he did not think the time was right to send a special emissary to the area. But he said Under Secretary General Brian Urquhart would go the Middle East by the end of the month to review United Nations peace keeping operations.
