Among this year's winners were Mr. Govan M'Beki, a member of the African National Congress, who is now serving a life imprisonment in South Africa for sabotage. Soviet journalist Yuri Zhukovn, a Pravda commentator, was also named a distinguished journalist and two South American journalists were given posthumous awards.

Elmocatalan Aviles of Chile was killed while accompanying guerrillas in Bolivia, and Argentinean editor Juan Garcia Elorrio died last year.

At the opening of the conference, the delegates from about 90 countries heard the report on the activities of the organisation since the last meeting held in Berlin five years ago. The delegates also heard messages from heads of State.
