Background: The Spotlight falls on Livingstone named after the great Missionary explorer and geographer. So far as we know he was the first white man to visit this part of Central Africa, discovering the Victoria Falls in 1855 and naming them after his queen.

Flowing through its gorges below the falls, the Zambesi swirls into the famous Boiling Pot much as Livingstone himself first beheld it. Indeed little has changed in the last hundred years beyond spanning the gorge with a railway bridge, which enables more tourists to view this wonder of the world. Wonder is right, for that is the feeling the falls engender in everyone who sees them. Nearby is a nature reserve where sagacious Simians regard tourists as a soft touch and trade on them shamelessly.

Trolley cars still give easy access to some of the district's unspoiled beauty spots. There is little to indicate man's intrusion, apart from the Hydro electric power station which supplied the nearby Town.

Among Livingstone's attractions is its fire museum housing relics of Rhodes and Livingstone himself. The museum specialises in the origin of man and the development and history of the native tribes in the area. An interest in Prehistory is natural in a region of such unique natural development.

Another tourist attraction is the offering of curies wrought by Barotse tribesmen, and fascinating it is watching these craftsmen at work. These artists are practising old skills, but many of the Barotse and other tribes have become skilled in factories, which increasingly are transforming Livingstone into a flourishing industrial area. Nuts and bolts are made here and other light engineering items. Other factories turn out furniture, basket ware and woodby-products. Yet others are engaged in the manufacture of clothing and of textiles. Two factors responsible are the availability of labour and the cheap electric power generated at the Falls, potent aids to Livingstone's new way of life and livelihood.
