Background: Nigerian economic experts met their Polish counterparts for talks aimed at boosting trade and economic co-operation between the two countries on Thursday (21 November) in Nigerian capital, Loges.

Delegates from the two countries discussed economic, scientific and technical co-operation agreements between both countries.

They were also expected to discuss a trade agreement which has lapsed. Nigeria and Poland signed a formal trade agreement last August, but the present volume of trade between both countries - done through third parties-had been negligible.

The Nigerian delegates, led by the Commissioner for Economic Development and Reconstruction, Dr. Abebayo Adedeji, were anxious to renegotiate a credit arrangement pf 20 million Naira (about 12 million pounds sterling) arranged with Poland, but never activated.

New areas of co-operation in industry, agriculture and mining were also discussed. Reports said Poland was hoping to increase its present stake in textile in Nigeria from two to seven.

Reports quoting Nigerian sources also said discussions had reached an advanced stage for a joint fishing venture between Poland and an indigenous Nigerian company.

The Polish delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister, Kazimierz Olszewski.
