  • Description

A Conference of the Ivory Coast's ambassadors to foreign countries began in Abidjan on Monday (August 10).

Coinciding with the Nation's celebrations of a decade of independence from France, the conference was intended to brief the ambassadors on the Ivory Coast's achievements in those ten years.

Foreign Minister Arsene Assouan Usher chaired the meeting, which was held in secret, and was due to end on Thursday (13 August).

The envoys heard reports from Ministries and Government departments in charge of economic development, education and agriculture.

This year the honour of organising the Independence Celebrations went to the town of Gagnoa, 185 miles north-west of the capital. President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Ivory Coast's first and only President, took the salute at a large military parade.

Ivory Coast is now West Africa's most prosperous nation, due to a four-fold increase in exports since independence. The country ranks fourth in the world as a coffee producer, and fourth in cocoa sales.

Ivory Coast is also Africa's most important trader in timber.
