  • Description

THE JESUITS HAVE ELECTED A SPANISH BASQUE PRIEST WHO SURVIVED THE 1945 ATOM BOMB EXPLOSION IN HIROSHIMA AS THEIR NEW SUPERIOR GENERAL. THE GENERAL'S MANTLE WENT TO BILBAO-BORN FATHER PEDRO ARRUPE WHO IS 57 YEARS OLD. HE WAS ELECTED RULER OF THE 36,000 JESUITS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD ON THE THIRD BALLOT OF A PRIVATE CONCLAVE ON SATURDAY.

THE NEW LEADER OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH'S MOST POWERFUL AND HIGHLY TRAINED RELIGIOUS ORDER SPEAKS SPANISH, JAPANESE, ENGLISH, FRENCH AND GERMAN. HE HAS WORKED OUTSIDE HIS NATIVE COUNTRY SINCE 1931 AND WAS IN HIROSHIMA WHEN THE ATOMIC BOMB EXPLODED. BEFORE BECOMING A PRIEST HE WAS TRAINED AS A DOCTOR OF MEDICINE AND HE ORGANISED A HOSPITAL ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY.

AS SOON AS FATHER ARRUPE WAS ELECTED - UNDER THE RULES OF THE ORDER HE COULD NOT REFUSE - AN ENVOY WAS SENT TO POPE PAUL WHO SENT HIS BLESSINGS. NOW THE SUPERIOR GENERAL - SOMETIMES KNOWN AS THE BLACK POPE - WILL PRESIDE OVER DELIBERATIONS AT THE JESUIT GENERAL CONGREGATION ON HOW TO MAKE THE ORDER'S WORLD-WIDE OPERATIONS MORE EFFECTIVE. A MAJOR ITEM BEING DISCUSSED IS WHETHER HE SHOULD RULE FOR LIFE, AS HAS HAPPENED IN THE PAST, OR FOR A FIXED TERM OF OFFICE.

FATHER ARRUPE SUCCEEDS THE LATE FATHER JAN BAPTIST JANSSENS OF BELGIUM WHO DIED LAST OCTOBER. HE HAD HEADED THE ORDER SINCE 1946.
