  • Description

Raoul Island, the New Zealand weather station in the Pacific threatened by a volcanic eruption, was abandoned at two o'clock this afternoon.

The New Zealand Navy's survey ship Lachlan took off the island's staff of weather men and members of an ornithological expedition.

The ship should be back in Auckland by Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 25).

The Acting Director of the New Zealand Meteorological Service, Dr J.F. Gabites, says Raoul Island won't be re-opened till a geophysical survey by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research reports the island safe.
