Background: About two hundred Iranian and Indian students staged a rally outside the Afghan Embassy in New Delhi on Tuesday (1 April) to protest against the Soviet military presence in Afghanistan. They marched there from the Egyptian embassy where they demonstrated against President Anwar Sadat's decision to give refuge in Egypt to the deposed Shah of Iran.

SYNOPSIS: The Iranian demonstrators are members of the Students Islamic Association and they condemned President Sadat's act of giving shelter tot he former Shah as a sin against Islam and the world's Moslems. The students also protested against the establishment of Israel's embassy in Egypt.

The deposed Shah arrived in Egypt from Panama on March 24th, just before Iran planned to start extradition proceedings against him. On Monday (31 March) he was recovering in Cairo from an operation to move his spleen. American surgeon Michael Debakey decided to remove the ex-Shah's spleen because it was destroying rather than filtering his blood.

The Iranian and Indian students marched on to the Afghan Embassy where they demanded that President Babrak karmal order Soviet troops to withdraw from Afghanistan. Mr. Karmal came to power in a Soviet-backed coup on December 27th, 1979. Speaking in kabul last month (21 March) he said Afghanistan's revolution was entering a new stage and the country had sufficient means to push forward its social and economic development. The Afghan President said his country had traditionally enjoyed friendly relations with the Soviet Union. He claimed the recent increase in cooperation between the two countries was the wish of the Afghan people.
