• Short Summary

A new political party in West Germany ... Called "Union fur Frieden" (Union for Freedom),?

  • Description

A new political party in West Germany ... Called "Union fur Frieden" (Union for Freedom), it was founded at Stuttgart, Dec 17. It opposes the West German Government's foreign policy and calls for disarmament and the military neutralisation of all Germany.

A number of well-known pacifists are standing for the leadership, including Frau Professor Renato Riemeck, Pastor Martin Niemoller and Victor Agartz, the former chief ideologist of the German trade union movement. Frau Riemeck or Herr Victor Agartz is tipped to win.

Speakers at the founding of the new party were Frau Riemeck and Graf von Westphalen. Before addressing supporters, Fran Riemeck presented flowers to Fritz von Unruh, a well-known poet and supporter.

The party has not attempted to outline domestic policies as it is concerned exclusively with military problems and what arises from them. It claims that Dr. Adenauer's "policy of strength" has not given Western Germany real security or brought reunification any nearer, and that the Social Democratic Opposition is not producing an alternative policy.
