  • Description

British jockey Freddy Head rode the French four-year-old filly Ivanjica to an impressive victory on Sunday (3 October) in the world's richest horse-race -- the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, Paris. Her American owner, Mr. Jack Wertheirmer collected 1,200,000 Francs (GBP 141,000 sterling) in prize money.

SYNOPSIS: Ivnajica was the ninth filly in the 55-year history of the race to land Longchamp's showpiece. She started the race well down the field. Kasteel led Exceller, Pawneese, Floressa and Youth out of the stalls. Then Kasteel and the front running Pawneese opened up a lead of several lengths which they maintained until the straight. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the superb display by Noble Dancer -- the first ever Norwegian challenger for the great race who was kept handily placed by British jockey Geoff Lewis to come fourth.

Ivanjica came in with a pulverising run in the final furlong (200 metres) that swept her past Crow -- the English St. Leger winner -- ridden by French Champion Jockey, Yves Saint-Martin. It was the third time that Head has won the Arc. He last won the race in 1972 on another filly San San. His first victory was exactly 10 years ago on Bon Mot. It was also the third time his father, Alec Head, has shared the Arc victory honours -- he trains Ivanjica Placed second was Crow with Youth in third place. Fifth was Bruni ridden by Lester Piggot.
