    Nearly twenty thousand troops have taken part in a military exercise organised by the British Army of the Rhine in West Germany. The operation --code named Exercise keystone--reached its climax on Wednesday (@$ October with a series of mock battles near the town of Hamlin, in the hill-lined valleys of northern Germany.

    SYNOPSIS: The backbone of Exercise Keystone was provided by 145 Chieftain main battle tanks. They were supported by infantry and artillery and a full range of military units.

    Here troops from the Scottish Lowland ??? fire at the ??? -- in the form of the ??? Armoured Division, as well as Danish and Dutch troops. The aim of Exercise keystone was to stop a potential enemy from occupying territory in West Germany.

    The scene of the mock battle was the countryside around the German town of Hamlin--of Pied Piper fame. Over three thousand members of Britain's Territorial Army took part in the action--much of which was within 25 miles (45 Kilometres) of the bolder with East Germany.)
    The British Army forms part of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) forces in West Germany. NATO was founded in 1949.
