INTRODUCTION: At the Brands Hatch motor racing circuit near London, several of the world's leading Formula One drivers were competing in the Formula One Race of Champions. The race on Sunday (20 March) attracted many of the top drivers, but it did not count towards the world championship.

SYNOPSIS: From the start, American driver Mario Andretti in a John Player Special Lotus went into the lead from the front row of the grid. He was quickly followed by current world driving champion, James Hunt in a McLaren. Hunt had started from the second row, but quickly overtook John Watson who was in pole position in his Brabham.

Watson's team-mate, Carlos Pace, was killed on Saturday (19 March) in a light aeroplane crash in Brazil.

James Hunt was forced to drive hard to keep up with Andretti, and set a new lap record of 1 minute 19.48 seconds in his attempts to catch the American.

But Andretti's race ended six laps from the finish, when his car's engine failed, leaving the way open for the world champion. South African driver, Jody Scheckter, then moved up into second place in his Wolf Ford.

But Scheckter was not able to overtake Hunt, and the champion went on to take the chequered flag for his first formula One win of the current season.

The win was a good morale booster for Hunt in his title defence. Scheckter finished second, with John Watson third.
