  • Description

IN CEYLON, WIDESPREAD DISSATISFACTION IS REPORTED ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT'S INTENTION TO TAKE OVER NEWSPAPERS AFTER THE PRESS BILL IS PASSED IN PARLIAMENT. THE GOVERNMENT HAS ALSO ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL BE SETTING UP A GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED NEWS AGENCY.

THE DRAFT BILL WAS ANNOUNCED ON AUGUST 28TH AND NEXT DAY A PROCESSION OF DEMONSTRATORS MADE THEIR WAY TO A MAMMOTH MEETING CONVENED BY THE SINHALA JATIKA SANGAMAYA (SINHALESE NATIONAL SOCIETY), TO PROTEST AGAINST THE BILL. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE JOINED BY THE FAMOUS KANDYAN DANCERS.

LEADING MEMBERS OF THE BUDDHIST CLERGY WERE THE MAIN SPEAKERS. THE GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSAL TO ALLOW FREE TAPPING OF COCONUT TREES TO PRODUCE TODDY - AN INTOXICATING DRINK - ALSO CAME UNDER SEVERE CRITICISM.

THIS DEMONSTRATION WAS FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER ORGANISED BY THE UNITED NATIONAL PARTY, WHOSE LEADER IS THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER AND LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION PARTY, MR. DUDLEY SENANAYAKE. THE DEMONSTRATORS STAGED A THREE MILE WALK WHERE ONE OF THE SPEAKERS, COLOMBO'S MAYOR MR. SUGATNADASA, ADDRESSED THE GATHERING.

IN VIEW OF THE MOUNTING PUBLIC TENSION THE GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED TO REMOVE SOME FEATURES OF THE BILL, BUT CAMPAIGNING STILL GOES ON UNABATED.
