Background: Portugal and Poland signed a joint declaration on Tuesday ( 30 September) to develop friendly relations and economic co-operation between their two countries.
The agreement marked the end of a four day state visit to Poland by thee Portuguese President Francisco da Costa Gomes. Details of the proposed development will be discussed at a joint Polish-Portuguese commission in October.
Neither President da Costa Gomes nor his host, Polish Communist Party leader, Edward Gierek, attended the signing but Mr. Gierek and the Polish Head of State, Henryk Jablonshi, accepted an invitation from President da costa Gomes to visit Portugal at a later date.
President da costa Gomes left Warsaw on Wednesday by air for a visit to Russia.
