Background: BEIRUT, LEBANON
The regular forces of the Lebanese army have begun the task of clearing West Beirut of illegal armed militia and residents as they try to establish their authority in the city. With the gradual of withdrawal of the Israeli army from the areas they invaded after the assassination of President-elect Bashir Gemayel, the Lebanese army is moving in to fill the power vacuum. In the Ain Moureish area of the city, where this film was shot, the army split up into search parties and combed the streets to root out illegal residents. On this occasion they were also looking for a gunman following an incident in which an Israeli soldier relaxing in a pavement cafe was shot down by an unidentified assailant. The army campaign against illegal residents is reported to have produced a haul of 300 people. Houses are systematically searched and civilians stopped in the streets to have their papers checked. The army is trying to create a zone free not only of illegal armed forces but also of illegal residents, and they plan to co-operate with the assembling multinational peacekeeping force to extend the operation to the whole city. The first contingent of 350 Italian paratroopers and 320 marines have landed at the port of Beirut where they are being joined by French and United States' troops to make up the 3,000 strong body.
