  • Description

BRITISH OFFICIALS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) RETURNED TO THE U.S.S.R. THE WRECKAGE OF A SOVIET JET FIGHTER WHICH CRASHED INTO LAKE STOESSENSEE, IN WEST BERLIN, ON 6 APRIL.

THE TWO CREWMEN OF THE AIRCRAFT WERE KILLED IN THE CRASH. THE PLANE HAD BEEN FLYING IN FORMATION WITH TWO OTHER AIRCRAFT OVER EAST GERMANY WHEN IT EXPLODED IN A BALL OF FIRE AND SPIRALLED DOWNWARDS.

NO OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN MADE ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF AIRCRAFT IT WAS. UNOFFICIAL REPORTS HAVE STATED THAT IT WAS A MODERNISED TYPE OF YAK-25 FIGHTER-BOMBER CAPABLE OF CARRYING NUCLEAR ROCKETS AT SUPERSONIC SPEED.

THE HAND-OVER TOOK PLACE ABOUT FIVE MILES (EIGHT KMS) DOWN THE HAVEL RIVER ON THE MID-WATER BORDER LINE BETWEEN THE BRITISH SECTOR AND EAST GERMANY. THE WRECKAGE WAS TRANSFERRED FROM A BRITISH ARMY TANK LANDING PONTOON FERRY TO A SIMILAR SOVIET VESSEL. REMAINS INCLUDE THE FUSELAGE.

RECOVERY OF THE WRECKAGE WAS CARRIED OUT UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYES OF BRITISH AIRCRAFT EXPERTS. MANY OF THE PARTS WERE PHOTOGRAPHED BEFORE THEY WERE RETURNED TO THE SOVIET FORCES.

BRITISH TROOPS MAINTAINED A STRONG SECURITY GUARD AROUND THE LAKE AS FROGMEN PLUNGED IN TO SEARCH FOR THE WRECKAGE. SOVIET OFFICERS WERE ALLOWED TO WATCH THE OPERATION ONLY FROM ABOUT 200 YARDS (183 METRES) AWAY.
