  • Description

WEST BERLIN MAYOR KLAUS SCHUETZ WAS GREETED WITH JEERS, BOOS AND CAT-CALLS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY), WHEN HE TOLD A CROWD OF 10,000 EXILES FROM FORMER GERMAN TERRITORIES THAT EXISTING EUROPEAN FRONTIERS MUST BE RECOGNISED AS PERMANENT.

THE EXILES FROM FORMER GERMAN TERRITORIES NOW UNDER SOVIET AND POLISH RULE, MANY OF THEM WEARING TRADITIONAL DRESS, GATHERED IN WEST BERLIN'S HUGE WALDBUEHNE OUTDOOR THEATRE TO CELEBRATE THE ANNUAL DAY OF THE HOMELAND.

MAYOR SCHUETZ, SPEAKING AGAINST AN ALMOST CONTINUOUS CHORUS OF CAT-CALLS AND BOOING, DECLARED THAT THE EXISTENCE OF EAST GERMANY AND OF POLAND'S FRONTIERS IS AS MUCH A REALITY AS THE EXISTENCE OF WEST BERLIN ITSELF.

A SOCIAL DEMOCRAT, HERR SCHUETZ IS A LEADING ADVOCATE OF WEST GERMAN RECOGNITION OF POLAND'S POST-WAR WESTERN FRONTIER -- THE ODER-NEISSE LINE, SEPARATING POLAND FROM EAST GERMANY, GAVE THE POLES A LARGE AREA OF TERRITORY FORMERLY A PART OF GERMANY.

THE CROWD GAVE A MORE SYMPATHETIC HEARING TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE EXILES' FEDERATION AND MEMBER OF FEDERAL PARLIAMENT, RHEINHOLD REHS, WHEN HE SAID THAT GERMANY'S POST-WAR DEMARCATION LINES COULD NOT BE RECOGNISED AS PERMANENT.
