Background: Champions from many countries competed in the ninth International Athletics Meeting in Formia, near Naples, Italy, on Thursday (8 May). Competitors came from as far afield as Tanzania and Denmark.
Among the highlights was an easy victory to Tanzanian world 1500 metres record holder Filbert Bayi, in a 1,000 metres race.
Italy's Giordano Ferrari won the high jump event, but failed to break the 2.20 metres record.
In the 200 metres hurdles, Ugandan world 400 metres hurdles record holder John Akii Bua was beaten into third place by two Polish runners-- the winner was Jan Pusty in 23.6 seconds.
